As winter is officially in full-swing – and the days get colder, wetter – and darker! – keeping up with your training sometimes gets that little bit harder. Fitting training around work while daylight hours dwindle presents its own challenges so whatever training you are doing, keep some simple steps in mind to stay safe this winter!
Run to Be Seen!
Even for the most self-conscious of you, when it comes to running in winter, make sure you run to be seen!
There are plenty of options now in terms of reflective and glow in the dark kit, with most manufacturers offering different lines of clothing.
Head-torches after dark are ideal to see and to be seen, in dimly lit areas. They should help you dodge potholes and uneven ground, saving your ankles too!
Stick to Routes You Know
Keep your exploring to daylight hours, perhaps at the weekend? Taking note of landmarks when running on-road or off-road will help familiarise you with the route.
Once you’re happy with the orientation and route back, feel free to go exploring before or after work.
Charge Your Phone
Sounds simple, because it is! It’s amazing how many people don’t check before running or cycling off into the distance, but make sure your mobile is charged and kept with you during your session.
Alternatively, there are some great, lightweight, portable charging packs available to give you some more juice when you need it.
It’ll be a blessing if you get stuck or suffer an injury that hinders the return leg.
Take a Buddy
Having a training partner can be great for company, motivation and bring out the good, old competitive edge.
But outside of these reasons, if you find yourself injured or in need of an extra inner tube after a puncture, they can come in very useful in times of need!
Happy Trails!
